For most trips, no. The main routes to Tekapo, Queenstown, Kaikoura and the West Coast are sealed roads that any of our cars will handle comfortably. A 4WD or SUV is worth considering in winter, particularly if you are heading to the ski fields, where access roads can require chains or 4WD. Tell us where you are going and we will tell you honestly what you need.
